// Loch Kemp Storage - Building the Digital Foundations for a Smarter Energy Future

As the UK accelerates its transition towards a more resilient, low carbon energy network, projects like Loch Kemp Storage are set to play a critical role. The proposed 600MW pumped storage hydro scheme on the shores of Loch Ness will provide long duration energy storage, helping to balance renewable generation and strengthen the stability of the national grid. For infrastructure of this scale, success depends not only on engineering excellence, but on establishing the right digital foundations from the very beginning.

Appointed by Statera Energy during the project’s early development, Informed Engineering was tasked with creating the information management framework that would support every stage of delivery. From developing Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) and BIM and CAD standards for the tender process to reviewing BIM Execution Plans and providing ongoing technical assurance, the focus has been on creating a consistent, collaborative approach to managing project information.

Project name:
Loch Kemp Storage
Client Name:
Statera Energy
Start Date:
2025
Completion year:
In progress
Location:
Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands
Sector:
Renewable Energy / Pumped Storage Hydro

Rather than imposing rigid processes or software requirements, Informed Engineering worked closely with the client, designers and delivery partners to develop practical solutions that aligned with the project’s objectives. By embracing the principles of ISO 19650 while recognising that different organisations use different digital tools, the team ensured that high quality information – not specific software – remained the priority and the focus was on project delivery and outcomes, keeping technical jargon to a minimum.

Alongside this, Informed Engineering has advised on ISO 27001 information security requirements, helping establish the governance needed for a nationally significant infrastructure project. As the project moves from procurement into delivery, Informed Engineering continues to support the client through regular collaboration with contractors and design teams, ensuring information standards remain consistent and that digital delivery keeps pace with the ambitions of the scheme.

Informed Engineering made it clear from the offset that the focal point was ensuring that information was project managed in the same way that physical construction will be. Starting with a specific product, achieving the desired quality and delivering when planned.

This proactive, client side approach reduces risk, improves coordination and provides confidence that the information created today will continue to deliver value throughout the asset’s lifecycle. Loch Kemp Storage demonstrates that successful infrastructure begins long before construction starts. By combining strategic insight with practical delivery, Informed Engineering is helping to create the digital framework that will support one of the UK’s most significant renewable energy projects and establishing the foundations for smarter, more resilient infrastructure in the years ahead.
