Rolls-Royce SMR is developing a new generation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to support the future delivery of reliable low carbon energy through modular manufacturing and assembly. Working with BAM Nuttall, Informed Engineering provided specialist digital engineering expertise that helped validate the innovative Site Factory concept through advanced construction sequencing and 4D simulation.

Unlike conventional nuclear projects, the Rolls-Royce SMR programme adopts a manufacturing led approach, with major components fabricated off site before being transported for assembly. The Site Factory was developed as a controlled construction environment to improve productivity, increase programme certainty and create a safer, more efficient method of delivering complex nuclear infrastructure.

Informed Engineering developed detailed 4D construction simulations that digitally rehearsed the complete construction sequence before physical works began. Every stage of delivery was modelled, including earthworks, foundations, Site Factory erection, modular assembly, logistics, crane operations, delivery sequencing and workforce planning.

The simulations enabled the project team to test construction methodologies, optimise sequencing and identify logistical constraints before they could affect delivery. By validating buildability within a virtual environment, Informed Engineering helped de-risk construction, improve programme certainty and provide confidence that the manufacturing led approach could be delivered safely and efficiently.

The models became a decision support tool, supporting planning, coordination and construction assurance throughout the development of the Site Factory concept.

The detailed digital simulations helped secure approval of the Site Factory concept earlier than anticipated, demonstrating the practical benefits of digitally rehearsed construction.

This project illustrates how advanced construction sequencing, off site manufacturing and digital engineering can reduce risk, accelerate decision making and support the successful delivery of innovative clean energy infrastructure. It also demonstrates how digital engineering is helping shape the future of industrialised construction by validating complex fabrication and assembly methodologies before construction begins.
